Duane,

I used to use a patrol competition.
We had a Ranger of the year, so I thought I'd try a Patrol of the Year.

I made a special patrol flag - a Lion lying on a field with his paws around a
Ranger emblem.
In the backgrpound was a Cross on a hill with a sunrise behind.
The cross had a purple robe on it ( the one given to Christ as a mockery),
but the shadow cast by the cross had no robe, since it was shameful only in
the eyes of man, it was the Glory of God.
Across the top was "Lion Patrol"
Next to the Lion I drew a scroll with the Scripture from Revelation " The
Lion of the Tribe of Judah has overcome and is worthy."
I lashed the staff together and strung beads across the top in the colors of
the Emblem - 4 gold, 4 red, 8 blue
I used white cord for purity
I told the boys that whoever won the patrol competition would be overcomers -
overcoming the natural tendency of Pioneers to do their own thing and working
as a team

I awarded points for advancement, outing attendance, uniform inspection,
patrol spirit, etc.
I would make each boy a bolo with a lion's head. On the back was their patrol
name and the year they won.

The Lion Patrol was the honor patrol.
They got to march in the front of the outpost at PowWow. They got first
choice of campsite.
And they were expected to live up to a higher standard of leadership.
Four of those Pioneers went on to earn their GMA.
Those and most of the others are in roles of leadership here or at other
churches and outposts
One even went to Outdoor Leadership School in Colorado and now serves as a
webmaster for the NSA.

The Lord gave me the idea and the design for the standard in one night after
I had prayed.

The point is I used the natural desire to compete and directed it to the
Patrol System.
