The pokemon craze started in Japan right around the time those tamagotci's
were starting to fade out. It is a game similar in concept to the
tamogotchi. Basically you catch and train these "pocket monsters" (which is
what pokemon means) for trade and to fight. It then spawned into a tv show,
toys, clothes, cards and more games. I sell this stuff for a living, and
you are right, it is quite the fad right now. It has been going strong for
about 2-3 years in Japan, and started late last year with the release of the
games in the US. I was just reading in a trade magazine last night an
interview with Nintendo's retiring CEO Howard Lincoln. His goal for the
remainder of his time with Nintendo is to continue the 1 Billion dollar
pokemon craze. Nintendo is the one responsible for pokemon, and it is
obviously their biggest money maker right now. Another interesting note,
Wizards of the Coast the licensees of the card game was just bought last
week by game company Hasbro, whose marketing might should be able to help
keep the hype up.
Hope this helps
Brian
