Hi Mike,
These are my comments such as they are. Someone considering
RR should have his family involved in the decision. The wife
needs to be willing to support him, otherwise he has no
business being there. When my husband told me about RR and
asked what I thought (the idea was that our son would join
and Tim would volunteer where he was needed), it was an
answer to prayer. I had asked God to give my husband and son
something to do that was theirs and I really felt this was
the answer. When he (husband) decided to become a commander
and take the training, I was willing to go along with that
as well. I did, however, tell him I was not willing to leave
our church and join the Assembly, he agreed. I used all
those Monday nights as a night to invite a friend over to
watch a movie with me and the kids went to bed a little
earlier and had a longer "lights out" time. They also got
their own movie somewhere in the week so they were willing
to that for us.
Campouts are mother/daughter except for the few times my mil
took my daughter (it's a two and half drive to get there)
and it was strictly my time and she got gdparent time. This
wouldn't work if I still had little ones so maybe fathers
with real little children should hold off. Although our
senior commander has/had little ones but his wife is very
supportive of his commandership too.
Now that the missionette program changed, we feel that the
whole family is in RR, our daughter in the "friends"
program, me as the SA leader (shes my "assistant" on any
overnighters we will take), and son and husband where
they've been, except husband moved up a group to give our
son a chance for someone besides him as leader. And we still
haven't joined the Assembly church! My husband has been to
FCF and loves it, he's anxious for our son to get old enough
to join. That will another step in our RR participation.
If God is really leading the commander to be a commander,
there won't be any problems. You need to stay in prayer
about everything. IMHO, anyway.
