The reason for this is simple. the boy must know what is expected of him,
what behavior will and will not be tolerated while at pow-wow. The boys are
prepared prior to pow-wow, we learn the skills that they will need to know to
participate and we operate as a patrol and a well oiled machine. When we
attend the pow-wow it is extremely important to know what is going to occur
there, and what to expect, and when to expect it. The outpost is prepared for
the pow-wow throughout the year.
I would have problems allowing a boy to go to pow-wow without having a
clue as to what is going on there. He will become a safety risk to the other
boys. I want the boys to go to pow-wow, I want them to have fun, but I want
them to be mature and behave properly. I want them to know that there is no
room for misbehavior at the pow-wow because it is all too easy to become
unsupervised too quick. What I am saying is that there is calculated risk.
Police and Fire Depts, don't send untrained people to handle situations that
they are not prepared for. It's good policy, when it comes to salvation that
determination is made before hand, if the boy has already accepted the Lord,
he is going to pow-wow to be ministered to, but to have a good time. I just
simply cannot allow a boy to go to pow-wow unprepared and wantonly no matter
what the cause is about. No body is going to come to me and tell me that any
of my boys are posing a safety risk to the other people at the camp and ask
me to leave because my boys couldn't handle it. I have seen this done and it
is not pleasant. It is stupid. I don't care what rating the boy has to go to
pow-wow except for recruit, the boys can go if they come to the meetings and
participate.
If I took an unprepared child to pow-wow and something was to happen to
that child, I am responsible for that child. Part of that responsibility is
teaching the child what is going to happen before hand. Otherwise it is just
bad practice, it puts insurance in jeopardy and it can put lives in jeopardy.
That is just not an acceptable option.
My boys will have every opportunity to keep and maintain a high point total,
if they get behind due to lack of attendance, then a letter goes home. If it
is because sports gets in the way then he needs to participate in his
sporting event. I can issue a point waiver if the parent gets back to me
explaining what the situation was, and there really is no way a boy won't go
to pow-wow unless he just doesn't show up for the meetings. The point system
gives them the chance to earn points and lots of extra points so there will
be no real reason why he wouldn't have enough.
