Victor Zalaskos (I'm not certain of the spelling of the last name) had a web
page titled "Leadership and the Perfect Outpost." It is no longer available
at the web site I found it on; but it has some good ideas that I have
implemented with some success. If some of the Rangers from down under know
where the web site went, perhaps you could send Mike the address.
Some points are:
- Appear successful - no one wants to be associated with a perceived
failure.
- Don't beg for leaders from the pulpit (see the previous point). Ask men
individually.
- Get the boys in front of the church. Council of Achievement, Ranger Day,
etc. And don't do the same boring stuff. Liven it up. We did that and the
church is now wondering why the boys get to do all the neat stuff. The
Missionette girls have put pressure on their leaders to do neat stuff.
- Pray. The harvest is not yours, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send
workers.
- Create a Ranger newsletter. Announce their achievements. I overheard one
of our Pioneer boys saying to his parents that he got his name in the
"paper."
- With regard to question # 3 (FCF), yes. I would explain that the mountain
man was alone in the wilderness and had to be ready for virtually anything.
As Christians, we had better be ready to meet God or we will not make it.
If I think of more, I'll send it.
