In the 19 years that I have been in Rangers, I have had the privilege of
working in 4 different outposts in every possible position. I began as a
Buckaroo commander at Radiant Assembly of God in Colorado Springs, CO. I am
now the senior commander, Pioneer commander, and Trailblazer commander at
Belton Assembly in Belton, MO.
Every church I have served at has been different. Different in the way
Rangers was run, different in the support(or lack of) that Rangers received
from the church, different in the way kids behaved, and different in the way
commanders acted and led.
When I was in Okinawa(1982-1985), I was the Pioneer commander at
Neighborhood Assembly of God. All except 2 or 3 of the boys in Rangers was
the son of a military family. When we had formations for saying the
pledges, the boys stood at perfect attention. In the 3 years there, I only
had ONE boy argue with me(he apoligized the following Sunday). Discipline
there was not an issue.
Quite the opposite where I am now. Discipline here is quite often a
problem. The formations are less than perfect(but improving!). Roughly
half of our outpost here comes from the bus ministry. The majority of these
kids parents do not attend any church. I have to talked to some of the
parents that did not realize what church their kids were going to!
LTC teaches leaders how to deal with discipline problems. That is one of my
favorite sessions to teach. There are some very good principles and ideas
in the material presented. But, one thing the material does not cover is
the fact that not everything covered in that section will work for every
group.

part 2***
Another difference I have noted is in the area of activities...
In Colorado Springs, I once took a group of Buckaroos hiking up Pikes
Peak(what a nightmare). When the outing was announced, I had complete
cooperation from the parents and church staff. Other outings over the next
couple of years were met with equal cooperation and enthusiasm.
In Okinawa, activities were a little different. We did a couple of campouts
on the beach with some snorkelling and reefwalking, but not much more.
I read on Rangernet and hear at district events of various groups going on
extended canoe trips. I hear of outposts that are taking missions trips in
the US and abroad. These are great to hear about. They are inspiring.
The camporama trip last year was the biggest Ranger trip our church has ever
had. Even then, we only took 2 commanders and 4 boys.
Are we less of a Royal Ranger ministry than the ones who go on a camping or
hiking trip twice a month?
***NO! What we are is different!***
Our current manpower and budget limits what we can do in some areas. BUT -
we still "reach, teach, and keep boys for Jesus Christ".
I have been in the big Ranger groups where when I said "I need this for
Rangers...", the pastor took out the checkbook and it was done. I have also
been in the outposts where there had to be a fundraiser just to get boys to
pinewood derby.
I have been in the outposts that do 20 or more activities a year and the
ones that go camping once or twice.
I have seen the churches where boys called the leaders Commander at church
and in public. I have also been in the churches where the boys call the
commanders by their first name.

Let me try to bring a point to my ramblings....
My outpost is different from all other outposts. Yes, we are all Rangers,
but what works in Royal Rangers in Idaho may not be what will work in
Belton, Missouri.
The main thing --- reaching Boys!
Camping, hiking, awards, uniforms, discipline, GMA are all important and
should be incorporated in the Royal Ranger program. Just don't get so busy
with the "program", that you forget the ministry.
Don't be afraid to do some things different. A#1 has had some great ideas
lately. Some I have already tried, some I will try soon, others I will file
away for later evaluation.
Keep sharing yours ideas, visions, and sorrows with us on Rangernet. You
never know what "small idea" of yours will inspire another commander.
