I work at a university as a Media Technician and during the summer we do our
annual inventory of audio-visual equipment. For the most part, the operation
of the equipment has become more & more automated and much more
sophisticated. So sophisticated ,in fact, that in some cases, broken gear is
surplused instead of repaired because it is more cost effective to replace
an item than repair it.

As we entered the Machine Shop/ Diesel building, the diesel odor made me
think I was on a Navy ship. The light switches on the wall were smudged with
grease, along with the power controls to run the TV/VCR's and CD players in
the rooms. When we had finished, counting and cleaning gear, Rick said, "Hmm
there is supposed to be an Overhead projector somewheres around here". We
went on a treasure hunt looking for the wide-angled overhead. At long last
we came across a table in the far corner of one of the garages that was
laden with automotive manuals, log books, tools and something that looked
like a Big black goose neck sticking out from under some cleaning rags.

I took the rags off of the Overhead projector. It's lenses were covered with
greasy smudges and chalk dust. "Well what do you know, the Inventory number
on that old thing is #1. Whose hand writing is that!" asked Rick. "It's
mine". I said. It was the first overhead projector the college purchased
over 15 years ago. I dusted off the projector, cleaned the fresnel lens with
some cleaner and flipped on the switch. The lamp burned brightly, it's
vitality at peak performance as though it was purchased last week. I put a
spare lamp in the case. Rick said, "This projector should've been surplused
with other old ones". "Why?" I asked. "Just because it's old" he said. "It
doesn't "do" what the new ones can." I argued that it served a purpose here,
that it ran fine & was a simple uncomplicated piece of equipment to use.
Like Moses, this projector's strength never abated, neither did it's eyes
grow dim. I said, "Let's not surplus it just yet". Confused why I would seem
so defensive, Rick shrugged and obliged begrudgingly.

The old projector was a forgotten treasure, serving without complaint,
faithfully doing what it was designed for. Sometimes others may forsake us
in the course of a lifetime and sometimes we may even feel forgotten, but
consistency and perseverance are marks of Christian maturity. Holding on to
God in both good and bad times shows seasoned faith. And as Christians we
are each in God's book of life, never forgotten nor forsaken....nor to be
surplused as unwanted junk because we are too old.

Continuing on with my equipment inventory on campus this week, I came across
a audio cassette player that, after being plugged in, just wouldn't start. I
tried another power outlet in the room, I switched power cords, I even tried
shaking it.... nothing. On the outward appearance, the cassette player
looked quite new. I handed it over to our repair technician who surgically
removed it's cover and started tinkering inside. After running several tests
on the unit he said, "this cassette player is totally useless. Funny, it's
not that old. It has a faulty power supply. It is unable to receive a signal
from the main power source, there's not much I can do here. It's junk".

As I mentioned before, in the new world of electronics, it is more cost
effective to replace some types of equipment rather than to try and repair
them. Although outwardly the cassette player looked new and the buttons all
seemed functional, without being able to receive power it was useless. As
Christians we know that there is no hope for us beyond the grave outside of
Christ. Do you have a faulty power supply? Without God's Holy Spirit working
in our lives we are powerless, virtually useless. The quickening power of the
Holy Spirit energizes us and brings us the ability to overcome and to
witness of Christ to a lost world. Ask to receive God's Holy Spirit and be
revitalized!

There's a part of the Eagle Creek trail in Oregon that is cut from
a rock cliff, and is at least 100ft. above a rocky chasm and fair size
river.

I took the outpost there for a hike, at the end is a huge waterfall
that flows over the trail and you can stand behind the falls..and even
reach out and touch the backside of it!

To get there you must pass this cliff side portion of the trail.

This is a popular trail.. thousands pass each season, with no
handrail needed.. yet the boys asked me if it was completly safe...
and the truth is that last year a hiker fell to their death from
stumbling backward, right there!

One Pioneer who rarely listens<G> got every concerned... and then
as we approached the cliff showed fear! He got red faced.. and crowded
the wall of rock as we approched.. then he stoped!

*Where does FEAR come from?

Clearly in this boy he FEARED THE WORST! *The Un-known loomed ahead,
the world he knew suddenly required him to not make a mistake and step
off the trail! He was unsure he could walk that trail!

Do you face un-known trails where you FEAR a mis-step will lead to
distruction?

Courage is more than a word put in our RANGER CODE for us to say in the
safety of the Outpost meeting.. COURAGE come into play when we face
FEAR! We don't have to.. we can still be Christians, and go about our
lives avoiding situations... mayby quiting out of frustration..burnout,
un resolved communication..

*Or.. we can face the FEAR!

We stoped, and yes God answered our prayers for courage.. But we also
spoke kindness, encouragement, clear reasoning.. and added a dose of
good humor, This courageous Ranger passed the narrow trailside danger!

How did he do it?
-----------------

He "found" Courage, and overlooked the FEAR inside him!
I think he filled his heart and mind with light.. and that replaced the
darkness that griped him, thu friends and trust in others and in his
Lord!

HE OVERCAME HIS HANDICAP!

Courage!
