All,
I need some advice on the GMA.
I've got an 11 year old that is wanting to earn the GMA.
The only problem is he will be 12 in Feb.. when he
turns 12 he will be forced into youth. No if, ands or buts about
it. In other words no more Rangers.
I truely belive that he can get all 22 (?) merits in seven
months time IF he really works at. He currently has
three merits two of which are required merits.
I'm thinking about using a few Saturdays this month
to work on nothing but merits and advancments.
I also know the book says God and Family award.
Is there any way around this?
Any advice would be highly appericated.
To me if our Royal Ranger outpost gets just one
GMA achiver, it will totaly turn our Royal Ranger
program around.
Thanks,
Noel"Spirit Rider"Bell

Here's my spin on it... Remember I'm just a voice in the background
and not even close to official policy<G> I have been "thinking" this
over.. but realize Rangernet will find holes in it..
Bring it on!<G>
*I'd like to see a boy who enters youth continue to participate in FCF
and events outside his OP even if their is NO Trailblazer or Trailranger
group. Many of the outdoor events are better geared for older boys!
No 12 year old can carry a full pack down the pacific Crest Trail like
a 16 year old can.. *I ALSO BELIEVE THAT A GMA RANGER HAS A NATURAL
SHINE! ...and that means you know who he is on first sight!
What if instead of RUSHING the boy.. he was able in his own time to
continue at a self-pace to achieve the GMA?
What if we in RRangers opened our hearts and allowed the "Uth" boys
a chance to complete a condensed advancement course, that would result
in their achieving the GMA in the least possible time? We could do that
by integrating the challenger material into the "Uth" as an option. We
are the ones who must make the trail *understandible..
if we are to retain the older boys..
The GMA needs mature, successful boys to maintain it's tradition!
It needs to be desired, and coveted!
My heart goes out to the Uth boys who were solid Buckaroos and now may
feel that their time has passed.. They make judgment's and neglect to
richest for the full measure of what the GMA is when they see us as
leaders, insist that Ranger spirit only lives in a khaki uniform. *It
doesn't!
*THOUGHT! THIN ICE<G>
What we "desire" in the fulfillment of each advancement is that the
ranger choose to do his best to the stated requirement- no more or no
less that what is written.. It HAS to be this way!
This relates to authority and being open to Godly instruction.. that
by reading, thinking a young man might ACT RIGHT!
*However... the requirement with a honorable person does not need a
adult leader to judge the fulfillment, any more that our lives in Christ
require our Pastor to judge our "spiritual maturity"
We as Ranger leaders elect to encourage- promote and *explain..
but in all cases.. it is the BOY who must do something to advance!
Advancement in rangers LEADS to a goal.. and that is first a inner-
yeilding to do what is asked of us.. no more no less to remain in
fellowship...
*So I find I have no problem with any Ranger who has that
understanding.. the GMA Ranger can meet a challenge, form a plan and act
rightly to achieve the goal, using the resources he has at his command.
Here's my REVOLUTIONARY PROPOSAL!
No time limits!
No required meeting attendance..
Events and camps tailored for them the "GMA Patrol" aside from the
regular group.
The boys sign-up and pledge their HONOR!
They select a "advancement councilor" and register as a Trail ranger.
The "AC" and the boy work out the details of advancement with the
ethic that the requirements are done "No More- No Less" than what
the handbook states..
Think about all this...
Thanks,
Cdr.Duane Wheeler

This raises some interesting possibilities...
I have recently been faced with some similar situations. I have a boy that
was in Rangers - went to youth for 3 years - and now at the age of 17 wants
to come back to Rangers part time and finish his GMA. Another boy that has
been faithful in Rangers for several years and is working on his GMA
discovered "GIRLS" while at youth camp. Now he wants to be in youth and
Rangers. He is now attending Rangers every other Wednesday.
Additonally, the boy that recently discovered girls (Stephen), is one of my
patrol guides. Can a patrol guide be effective if he is only there twice a
month? I am considering removing him and giving the patrol to the assistant
patrol guide.
Did I mention that both of the boys mentioned above just joined FCF this
year?
My current policy is that the boys need to make a choice - Rangers or Youth.
If all the boys in my pioneer/trailblazer class made the same choice as
the last boy I mentioned, I would only have that class every other week!
.....
On the other hand..
There are many things a boy learns in Rangers that make him a great asset in
youth. As Duane said, "A GMA RANGER HAS A NATURAL
SHINE! ".
A boy that earns the GMA has accomplished a great feat. In the 25 plus
years that our church has been in existence, we have only had ONE boy earn
the GMA. That was the one that was presented two years ago.
I am rethinking my policy ... can a boy do both? What guidelines should be
set up? Should a boy be required to "qualify" for this special program?

*Cool.. one more shot!!
I like the Gold-Track period... just before the handbooks became
availible I sat down and typed out the entire program to Rangernet.
What that did was give me an "overview" of what it was, and I understood
that step by step National desires thru the achievement program, that
a boy be tested and confirmed in understanding the "meanings" of the
emblem and the RR Code.
*If then this is the desire... then when(speaking time) a boy comes to
that "understanding" is up to him. With time limits down, in an effort to
promote advancement and make rangers more successfull, before this
chalenge of "loseing" the boy to the "UTH" it seemes we neglect those boys
who have had a ranger "seed" planted in them. It is like "giveing up"
if we fail to reach out to all....
In scouts... if you ever mention that you were once a boy scout.. the next
question is: Did you earn the Eagle?
Reflect on that in Ranger terms...
"I could have earned the GMA but I went to Youth group...."
"I could have been GMA but my OP folded"
"I was a Trailblazer Explorer and FCF but went to the Youth...."
*Not every Ranger is GMA material, tho every Ranger who has the potential,
amd finds the motivation should be encouraged to try!
Finely! THIN ICE!
-----------------
The proof that our words are hallow when we say we "prefer the boys" is
that with Leaders we grant maximum liberal terms in offering a
correspondence course for the LTC courses... NTC is not required, nor even
any training to grant sign-off authority by a Commander.
The playing field should be leveled... and allow a boy the same liberal
rules to achieveing the GMA within reason.... and final assessment by a
"GMA Board of review"
Older boys want respect.
Like the LTC correspondent course... the message of achievement is built
into the requirements of the Gold Track.
'nuff said fer now...

Rocky Mountain outpost 207 policy is to NOT make boys choose between Royal
Rangers and Youth. We schedule meetings and activities such that they CAN
do both -- and some do. We have a GREAT youth group
(http://planetyouth.org) and GROWING Royal Rangers
(http://rangernet.org/207). To make this possible, we had Trailblazers on
Monday nights for a while. Right now, we have Trailblazers on Wednesday
nights before the youth group meets.
Why compete with the youth group when you can cooperate?
I know that not every church has the manpower and resources to make this
work well, but by the grace of God, we do, and it does solve some problems.
Remember the objective: reaching, teaching, and keeping boys and girls for
Jesus Christ!

All,
Thanks for the advice on the GMA, I'm still opened
to more. I think what I'll do is talk to the pastor
and see if he will make a exception for the boys
that are going for the GMA.
I know this boy that will 12 in Feb. is really wanting to
earn the GMA. The other boy I think wants it, but does
not want to do the work to get it. I say that because the past
two wednesday nights he'd rather paly then have class.
He also got mad when I did have class, because he was
afraid he would miss his receration. Please bear I mind, I did ask
him if he wanted to earn the GMA. The answer I got was "yes".
What do you do when a boy is more into playtime, rather
then earning merits towards the GMA (assuming he wants to earn it)?
Thanks,
Noel"Spirit Rider"Bell

The LTC states the "Play is the boys work"......
Don't fault the 12 year old for desireing to play, and wanting...
(in a way) the GMA. I read here that you desire a total program
and a boy earning the GMA will turn your program around..
This may or may not be true...or be the best thing...
I'd advise you to re-think this... *Waiting till later, when in God's
time the proper attitude and motivation might make for a more meaningfull
award. "Rushing" a boy, to beat a date, seems wrong.
My opinion only- worth little on the trade blanket<G>
The big picture is that we want to BLESS the boys, and like your pastor,
point the way, encourage, explain, challenge ect. but also let the boy
go.... and bless him for the future!
BTW *I'll take my own mdicine as well<G>

You gave us the limitation that there's no more Rangers. Why can't Rangers
be done at a time that doesn't conflict with Youth? You mentioned devoting
some Saturdays to earning merits - why not make it a regular thing (twice a
month or so). When the boy turns 12, get him in a Trailblazers uniform and
keep up the Saturday (twice a month or so) meetings. You might even grow a
full fledged Trailblazer program from this one boy!

Maybe I should clarify my statement that a boy has to choose between youth
and Rangers.
Both activities occur at the same time. The idea of having Rangers on a
different night has been discussed, but is not feasible because of lack of
manpower and a very crowded church calendar.
I am now taking applications for commanders who want to come to the Kansas
City area and hold Trailblazers class twice a month on Saturday. (Am I
kidding????) Maybe a Trailblazer group of boys from several churches in the
area meeting on a Saturday is an answer?
My original statement did sound a little harsh.... it wasn't meant that way.
I'm still exploring options.

Everyone
Please forgive me if I sound a little harsh and I am sold out for Rangers not
youth BUT I am tired of playing second fiddle (or third) to youth. It is a
proven fact, backed up by figures from National Office, the various
departments, and The General Council of the Assemblies of God. Royal Rangers
is the #1 (sorry Duane), the top soul winning program in the Assemblies of
God. Just think what we could do if we had the resources (money) that is
poured into the youth department. What could we do with Senior Commanders on
the Churches payroll, paid district commanders in every state, and paid
staff. We could do National Camporama every year. Man, what we could do.
Now to the point, I am tired of playing second fiddle to the youth. From
what I read here, if it weren't for the excellent Ranger programs I read
about here, many churches would not have the Youth program that they have. I
am aware that this does not hold true everywhere. I think its time the youth
played second fiddle to RANGERS. Seeing how my Pastor is good friends with
Thomas Trask, maybe I will ask him next time he is at our church. As you may
have noticed, this is kind of a sore spot with me and I apologize if I have
offended anyone.
