ALERT! in everything you do or think! *That's part of the Ranger CODE!
..and what you make of your self, depends to a large extent on your mental
alertness.

The boy who is mentally awake has more adventure in a day than a dull boy
has in a month. He gets more out of life- ...and he has much more to give
other people! *And down the road, a ALERT boy has a greater chance of
success in life's work and finding a successfull career for himself with
greater reward!

LEARN TO THINK
===============

In todays fast paced world of change, the most important thing to learn is
to THINK!

The ability to think...and especially THINK FAST goes with a mind that is
alert and interested and allways inquireing. Thinking fast in an emergengy
also depends on the habit of figureing out things in advance...and that is
the purpose of training.

When your best friends perhaps, become hurt...you will know what to do and
react properly while your friends still ponder what to do...they may be
stunned, but you've thought out what the right thing to do is...
and you are READY! Combined with training you've thought it through,
and know what to do if such an accident might happen.

The ART of CONCENTRATION!
=========================

Does your mind jump from one thing to another like a FLEA? *Or does it
stick to the job at hand? You have to keep your mind consistantly ALERT if
you expect to keep it from drifting.. *ARE YOU ABLE TO DO IT?

(Just for fun... check yourself at how many times your mind drifts as you
read Cdr. -=A=-'s message! <G>)

Some people seem to accomplish as much in one hour as other often seem to
do in two! They can finnish their studies and Homework quickly and have
time for all sorts of other things of intrest to them.

This is not because they are smarter, but perhaps they have learned the
secret to learning to CONCENTRATE!

Concentration... is made up of will power and self-control...
Try watching an exciteing Football game and notice how involved you are
and absorbed in every detail of the event! You become un-aware of
everything around you except the ball and the players... *THAT'S
CONCENTRATION! Now, Bring THAT same intense quality to your work and see
how much more you can get done!

Give yourself a definite length of time to accomplish a certain task..
like tomorrows homework for example, FORCE yourself to keep your attention
on the job you are doing... then finish on time.

*Clue!
(Don't put off a job that has to be done untill you feel like doing it..
DO IT and get it over with! Pick the hardest task, first..do your best and
move on!)

Do things offten enough in this determined mannor and it will become a
habit. *A GOOD HABIT!

*THINK WITH YOUR EYES!
=====================

There's a way of thinking with your eyes in addition to your brain.
How? by OBSERVING instead of just looking.

GREAT INVENTORS of History *observed...and thought about how things work,
and how things could be changed... *They watched, applied thinking skills
and came up with..
*The electric light
*The Automobile
*Steam Power
and all the Modern changes we seem to take for granted.

Other things that *Thinking can give you...

*Learning new skills...
*Reading for a Full life
*Understanding others!

Try it some time! *It'll CHANGE YOUR LIFE!<G>

We adults are familiar with the term "burnout" but we generaly think it to
be related to the workplace...

WHAT IF.. "Burnout" had no bottom age and in fact was what your boys
were acting out of in the meger performance of their achievement goals..

How would they talk and act? Would a burned-out Ranger show disengagement
and apathy? perhaps...thoughtlessness and aggression? "Tuneing out" or
acting out might signal the fact the Ranger was "BURNING OUT!"

In these cases the boy might just "go thru the motions" handing in
uninspired work and spaceing out waiting for freedom to arrive...

*That's the way it is sometimes with MY PERFECT OUTPOST!<G>

Let's talk about the truth of burnout....see if this makes sence!

The best predictor about "burn-out" is that it does NOT come from too much
work, too little time, or too little reward or compensation.. |Rather,
burn-out comes from powerlessness -a lack of control over what one is
doing... *Lacking control or a sence of "Knowing what to do" breeds
that hopeless "I give up" attitude!

*What's the cure?
=================

"the key to transforming student/Ranger apathy into student/Ranger
engagement, Mr.Kohn suggests, may be as simple as allowing
students/Rangers to make decision about their learning.
Alfie Kohn- Phi Delta Kappan 1998"

"Those who feel more control over what happens to them rarely become Ill
despite high levels of stress..."

"Everday/meeting ought to include at least one block of time where the
students/Rangers can decide what they will do"

"Parting with power is not easy,if only because the results are less
predictible without control"

*Opinions?

The Patrol meeting...
The Outpost planning sessions...
GOLD BAR staff meetings
Time for Sr.Guide to become "Sr Guide" ect.

Dear Rangers,
Here is a Poem I have just written. It sums up how God touched
me at our recent Pow-Wow.

In the Quiet

In the quietness of my home,
I heard God calling me,
His voice chilled me to the bone
I had hoped He would let me be

He spoke of things to come
And of things that have been
He spoke of pain caused by some
He said "I know you are keen"

His voice was soft and sweet
His touch, oh so warm
He is there for me to meet,
And not to mourn

I felt His arms around me spread
In loving embrace
He told where to tread
And of my sin, there is no trace.

So in the quietness of my home
God met with me
And told me I'm not alone
And now I'm truly free.

There's a storm coming, our Storm.
PROCLAIMING GOD'S LOVE TO A DYING WORLD
Say to the captives, 'come out,' and those in darkness, 'Be free!'
Isaiah 49:9
I looked to the heavens to where God dwells
I looked into my life to see he lives there as well.
Love in Jesus

16 year old Robin Grahm hugged his Dad goodby and sailed from San Pedro
California for the adventure of his life!

Robin had dreamed this trip, and planned every leg around the world
with his Dad.. *who had bought him a "Ranger 23" full keel sloop
and outfitted it for a circumnavigation of the Earth!

This 16 year old was the youngest person to attempt such a feat!

*The route would take the boy accross the Pacific to the south seas
where he would island hop west untill sailing accross the top of
Austrailia and then non-stop accross the Indian ocean... around So.
Africa and the Cape of Good Hope and then west across the Atlantic
to Pannama and out to the Gallapigos... *and then HOME!

Robin had the Plan, the Will, the Courage and the *Skills
to set off into the Ocean *ALONE!

Weeks went by without a word... Robin had skipped Hawaii to
make for Fanning Island as his first stop.. and back home
the lack of expected arrivial had began to trouble the public!

*How could a reasonable Father *LET HIS SON GO TO SEA?

The answer is that this boys Dad beleved in his son's dream and
raised him with a strong sence of freedom... The task was a measured
distance with a start and a finnish and stops along the way..

*Robin had many adventures.. and many, many days of being a prisioner
aboard his small fiberglass boat. His time in the So.Pacific islands
lasted a fullyear as he waited for the hurricane season to pass..
and suddenly he discovered he did not desire to move on west!

The Dream voyage.. was becomming a burden and the time alone that once was
freedom was now becomeing forced isolation!

Robin Grahm continued on west accross the atlantic and was becalmed
(ran out of wind and sat there) for 22 days and nights on a Ocean as
flat as a lake...

*When he finely arrived in the West indies.. he was tired, depressed,
confused and wanted to quit!

Though his dream was to sail around the world... there was many, many
valid reasons for him to quit.. sell the boat, give up and go do something
else..

He recieved a letter from his Dad...

" *Robin.. I understand your frustration, and desire to rest where you are
now... We planned for success and for you to have sailed three-quarters of
the way around the world is no small accomplishment.

Sell the boat.. take a deserved vacation and come home,son..
Love, Dad"

*Robin Grahm, now 18 had some adult decisions to make.
No one would criticize him for quiting because he had proven his courage
and abilities time and again... His Dad gave him permission to quit and
welcomed his arrivial home...

Just think.. *Land.. a *Home.. *FREEDOM!

Robin looked at his logbook the record of his voayage from childhood to
young adult... and made his decision!

*I'll finnish what I started out to-do for no other person but me!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

When Robin cast off from that island world the trip was re-newed!
He didn't feel heavy or depressed he felt he was makeing his own way,
and working for himself...

3 mo's later... a flotillia of small craft sailed out to greet
the returning young man on his arrivial home!

A 16 YEAR OLD BOY HAD SAILED AROUND THE WORLD ALONE!

*Boys!

You may not want to sail around the world... but your task is the same
when you start anything worth doing. Royal Rangers come to our Outpost
all the time... and many leave.

Mom brings them or Dad tells them to go.. and on arrivial they feel they
they were "ordered to go.. for their own good" ...mayby they start off
with a bang but loose "intrest" when the task get hard or complicated..

*Mayby like Robin you just want to stay put in one spot... or mayby you
want to quit? *No one will "put you down for those feelings..and you don't
need to make up an excuse<G> *any excuse will do..."

The truth of the matter is... *With GODS help, I will do my best!

If Royal Rangers is worth starting, then I think it's worth finnishing
for YOU!

Robin Grahm sailed around this entire planet by...

1. *setting a course and sticking to it.
2. *One hand for the ship...and one hand for himself! (You give-You get)
3. *Once plans are made, sit down and hang on!<G>
4. *anything worth doing is worth doing well....

God Bless yah!
