Firstly a republic is not necessarily different to a democracy. Republicans
and democrats are merely labels for political stances. A republic is simply
a state which is not headed by a monarch. There are a number of definitions
of a democracy one of which is "a government in which the supreme power is
vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a
system of representation usually involving periodically held free
elections". I think that the meaning in America has been slightly warped
because one of the political parties has chosen to call itself the
Democrats. Interestingly enough, in Europe, the democratic party is usually
the Christian Democrats! As far as I am aware the mail was written outside
of the US and is simply a voicing of what is seen as American hypocrisy i.e.
if the same thing had happened in Africa or South America, the US would be
withdrawing all aid and calling on the UN to do the same. Some time ago I
saw a program about the race to develop nuclear arms and power between the
Soviet Union and the US. The USSR simply suppressed all information about
the possible harmful effects. The US embarked on a propaganda exercise to
try to convince the nation that the production of nuclear energy was
beneficial to human health.
My own observations are that none of the political parties has an agenda
which I could subscribe to. My traditional leanings have been towards the
socialist end of the spectrum because of my birth and upbringing but the
"new" Labour party (= Democrats) seems hell bent on espousing homosexuality
in particular. The Conservative party (= Republicans) have no compassion
whatsoever towards the poor. Both my wife and I were struck by the harsh
attitudes of people we spoke to towards the unemployed. I wouldn't trust G
Dublya Bush any more that I would trust Bill Clinton. If he were a man of
principle he would allow the hand count to go ahead. He simply wants the
power, prestige and rewards which go with the job. There is a lot to be said
for a constitutional monarchy!!!
