First.. It's my considered opinion that RRangers pushes outdoor
camping too early in leu of useing proper boy leaders as trusted
advisors. 10 seems a young age for haveing them self-manage their
camp.
The effort to teach Adult supervision is in fact telling your older
Rangers they are not needed. The model I see is a scout based troop
where 10 is the very youngest camper and he is watched by 14-17 year
olds. *Those boys in Rangers have been sweep away, graduated and
so forth leaveing leadership to overweight overworked Adult men.
I didn't invent Pioneer camping, but I do know that Pioneers can
camp if it's safe and sane. I susspect Pioneer camping has given
Men the idea that all boys are needed supervision, and that is false.
If your outpost is weak on Leadership.. *Do not go outdoors!
There is no blessing in a bad experiance you the boys or for you.
*If however, you have a working system of trusted leadership ala
"chain of Command" then by all means use your resources and put
boys out in the brush by patrol.

I understand. What this shows is a fundimental misunderstanding that
responsible camps do not go to sleep with a fire burning. Rather, you
use proper gear or station a all night firewatch.
My tent was only a

Then in your Outpost I would never sleep!
The BSA Troop we camp with has 65 boys and uses boy leadership.
No one has starved, or been hurt. Few fights or bad words, because
the boys know *they are truly trusted, and real leaders...

I like that idea, but the tower lashing and repelling is outside
basic hygene and base camp mentality.*Those high adventure events
should be restricted to 13 years old and above. The goal in camping
with boys ought to be entrusting them to see the advantage of orginazation
and responsible management of each other, by themselves.
*So again what I see over and over is Adults obsessing over learning
campcraft.. when *Learning campcraft is what the boys need to do
for themselves while we work to build leadership(*Reach them) in them to
teach themselves...
My contention is it does not matter wich hand passes the sheath knife.
What does matter, is that a boy is welcome to learn and participate
as a full member of the Outpost. NTC showed that "winning" best
camp is only the duty of the boys...
Your "aquired knoledge" is enough as an adult.. the time of "Training"
would be better spent in learning to "present the program" to the
boy's and facilitate the logistics quietly, allowing the boys to
set the pace for adventure.
