Saudara Indra jaya Piliang,

Assalam mu alaikum wa rahmatul Llah hi wa barokatuh,
(Ma'afkan hambo berbahasa Inggeris)

I did read the mentioned newspaper report with interest despite difficulty in Bahasa and very local newscasting. Indeed, It is sad and this trend will continue unabated as you said and pointed out it is part of Geertz's argument for agricultural involution.  I really appreciate if could kindly provide a picture of an updated understanding of contemporary trend of political economy of Minangkabau. You did mention that the main political economic characteristic of Minang is agrarian or agriculture-based. I inferred from this is that its mode of production and the whole commercial and entrepreunal system are not strong enough or good enough to be competitive either at Indonesian regional level as well as at the higher level involving the outside world.

Not knowing precisely the political economy of Minangkabau and I have to acknowledge this fact, somehow I have to agree with you that what really needed in Ranah is economic intervention. You did itemized and emphasized what sort of economic intervention(s) you have in mind. These items are good to begin with.

Is it possible you could elaborate further your perception of economic intervention? How about starting the whole economic revitalization program with economic democratization and enlarging participatory economics over the existing political economic system of Minangkabau. May be, and I think, the main problem in Ranah is the low purchasing power/ kekecilan daya membeli. Of course, they are (historical) factors that why purchasing power of Minang people remain steady low for long time.

Whatever economic programs initiated will be ending up or with the objective of enlarging this individual and collective/aggregate purchasing power within the Ranah. Talking about increasing the overall purchasing power we are precisely talking about banking and financing aspects of the political economy of Minang. In what way and how far modernization of banking and financial sectors in Minang have taken place? If it is not, it is extremely difficult for a reformed political economy to deliver Minang to next meaningful level of competitiveness.

The idea to have training centers with the objective "untuk bisa bersaing di dunia kerja diluar ekonomi agraris" is very timely and appropriate. Are you also factor in the paramount importance and the significance of noneconomic dimensions in your economic renewal project either in Minang as well nationwide? Could you mention couple of them?

tulang sembilan kerat. Yang diperlukan bukan semacam Minangkabau Center,
melainkan semacam "Pusat Pelatihan Menuju Rantau". Modul-modulnya
