I believe that all the 6.5++ forms/reports will work correctly on 7.0;
however you will not be able to take advantage of the new features until you
modify/convert the forms/reports to the 7.0. I know that there are several
features in forms such as dbgrid, tabbed forms and so on that I could use
right now, so I will have to bite the bullet and finish the conversion to
6.5++ now and upgrade to 7.0 when available. By looking at the sample
application on the 7.0 web site, it looks like I will be redoing my menus as
well.
After the v7.0 training in Kansas City in 2 weeks I will have the Beta
version of 7.0 and this will help a lot, as I cab run both versions on the
same data base and I can run new modules in 7.0 and the main application in
6.5++ (I think...)

I too am in the same predicament. I have two DOS databases being converted
from 4.5 to windows and also integrated into one. I have done the physical
side and have been doing some of the forms and menus but this "magic" is
lurking in all of the messages on the server and from people going to the
class. I will be going to the class but I need something now (or I should
say my customer does). Do I do all of the form work in 6.5 and in a few
months (4-5) redo it with magic? I don't think that would be good cost
utilization of his resources.

There has got to be a better strategy to buy/sell R:Base; why would you but
a product that is essentially discontinued and the new one is already
announced but not released/available? I know many software companies in this
situation will provide a free upgrade to the new version if you buy a
product that is being replaced, the rationale being that you will wait to
buy the new release anyway, and they are better off getting you money now. I
imagine that many R:Base users (particularly those still running the DOS
version) would be more open to upgrade if they know that they will get the
upgrade at no cost, i.e. they will not have to pay for the product twice.
As a developer I am caught in this dilemma as I am in the process of adding
a new module to a large application that I just finished converting from
DOS. I have tried to delay development so I can use 7.0 but ...bills have to
be paid so, I have to complete development in 6.5++ , knowing that I will
have to go through a set of modification to take advantage of the new 7.0
features ...what to do ...what to do ...

David:

I know that it makes sense to got to Windows, but when the client dosen't
want to spend any money, and RB 7.0 is not quite ready for prime time,
what can you do. I don't want to convice the client to go to 6.5++
Windows when 7.0 may be 'around the corner'.

When 7.0 is released for production, I'll try to press the client to
proceed with windows.

I still can't believe that I asked a question at 8:55 PM on a Sunday night,
and had a reply from Mike Willochell at 9:45 PM, and it solved one of my
problems. They certainly are to be commended for their support to
developers and end-users. What other database firm would be responding on
a Sunday Night.
