Gunnar,

I couldn't agree with you more on point one below. I spent a good part of my career
in the IBM mainframe and DEC VAX world. The really strong point for these systems was
the strong backward compatibility. It sure made my life easy in developing and
installing systems as I didn't have to do major tinkering with my code each time there
was an operating system upgrade. That is not to say that I didn't have to make
changes but nothing on the order of magnitude that occurs with each version of
Windows. Often windows changes seem to be made without any apparent benefit. Just
read and of the tip columns in PC World or PC Magazine and see how there is this long
convoluted explanitation of how to make option changes depending on which version of
windows you have.

All of this has major training and usage costs (not to mention user frustrations) that
business has to shoulder.

Tellef!

1. I love your mail it proves my deepest believes Bill Gates are
responsible for a lot, being not backwards compatible is the most
serious one. Think about it! Even wasting the money of a small church!

2. I have still app's on 2.11 but when it comes to upgrade to 6.5++ I
refuse matrixprinters and go for Laser (Not to discourage you, I am only
to Lazy to find out how)

3. I will review the response to this so maybe even I can make some
of dot-matrix users happy with a conversion.

I am out of order now by adding that it would heaven if windows would be
going by the same rules as the rest of the world (or is it only me) by
giving value to backwards compatibility!

Hope you find a solution to your forms!

I can also add in praise that R:BASE as all the backwards comptaibilty
you can ask for!

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Printing on multi-part

Hallelujah, a client on 3.1 wants to upgrade to

RBWin! It is a church, a small client, so they

are interested in doing it for as little money as

possible.

It's a simple app, but they have 4 reports that

are printed on various sizes of multi-part dot

matrix forms, one of which is a tiny index-card

sized form. I remember several years ago totally

giving up on printing odd-size DM forms from

Windows; luckily that client had the money to

go to laser forms and their forms were all regular

size anyway.

Did I mention this is a church? There's no way

they'll change the forms that they've been using

since, well, since 'their leader' was born! So

I'm just looking for assurance that (in 6.5++)

that I will be able to print to the dot matrix

on these funky-sized multipart forms.

God bless!

Karen
