Damon, I agree with you completely. It's not the kids I'm concerned about, per se, but what they come to believe in terms of what their contribution should be vs. what they receive from the society around them (or their job). The current generation of young people are smarter, better dressed, and better groomed (save all the body piercing) than I was as a teen ager. But on the negative side I see a greater willingness to "coast" through school than I saw at my boys age... and while everyone I new (including myself) were working part time through high school, my son's friends actively avoid work. I, and my friends, were out of the house, in school and working at 18... I know way to many folks now who have kids at home near 30 who haven't decided on a career as yet.
