I would back what Clive said. I have used v8 - with 64-bit internal pointers - for some time on my desktop to download and manipulate data moving between one or more Oracle and/or SQL Server db's, more or less as an ad hoc ET(L) tool.
I purchased x9 (64-bit) because I saved a LOT OF TIME when attaching those tables and columns with LONG NAMES to my local RB database. To me, that was, and is, a huge benefit.
