I don’t find any of the negatives you mention with Win 10, but I did a virgin install on the existing hardware I had instead of an upgrade. Most applications start noticeably quicker over my Win 7 previous.
I even managed to get my old Autocad 2000 (16 year old software) to work on Win 10 without running it in XP virtual machine. I have a Linux system running from a flash drive and there seems to be very little that I do in Windows that I can’t do on this simple installation. A major consideration however, is running R:Base: Will it run directly under Linux? There seems to be ways of running some Windows programs but not all – will R:Base run in one of these systems? Presumably there is no problem with a dual boot set up? Any advice and comments would be welcome, Regards, Alastair.
