Subject: RE: RBase Vs Power Builder

There is NO comparisson between the mighty R:BASE vs PowerBuilder. Its like
comparing apples and oranges. R:BASE provides a TOTAL soultion with
integrated database, gui and programming language.

-------------------------------------
You have GOT to be kidding.... have you ACTUALLY worked with Power Builder
or any enterprise level 4GL, object oriented, event driven language, I mean
its R:Base is a great product for it niche but for crying out loud R:Base
DOES NOT EVEN HAVE SCOPED VARIABLES. If by saying "you can not compare
R:Base to Power Builder" because R:Base is not an enterprise level
development platform, then I would agree. It is a bit like trying to use
your passenger car at Indy.
-------------------------------------

Powerbuilder on the other hand should only EVER be compared with VB, as they
are both event driven programming languages. When you purchase either PB or
VB, you DO NOT get a database engine with the product. The engine must be
purchased separately.

-------------------------------------
This makes NO SENSE since the original thread WAS a question by Marc
Shluter. He was going into a PB shop to propose RBWin, besides aren't we
really looking at database application environments. I am not saying the PB
should be used for everything, as I have constantly maintained R:Base IS the
best solution in its market, but PLEASE do not try to somehow infer that
R:Base will provide a better solution across the board. Like Dirty Harry
Said.... 'A Man's gotta know his limitations". To believe that R:Base can
somehow go toe to toe with PB is absurd.
-------------------------------------

While PB is very powerful, I can tell you from vast experience with both
products, that you will code the R:BASE app in 1/2 the time and implement
the solution at 1/2 the cost (roughly speaking) by choosing R:BASE.

-------------------------------------
Considering that there are applications that can be developed in PB that CAN
NOT possibly be accomplished with R:Base, don't you think you should qualify
this? What about embedded code for devices, N-Tier, Non-visual Stubs for
Middleware applications, true compiled code, OLE Servers and your choice of
ANY desktop database, fileserver-based database (even R:base) or enterprise
client server database. Does R:base have a foundation class, or allow for
compiled reusable objects? I could go on for ever. What say we first qualify
the requirements and pick the right tool for the Job.
-------------------------------------

In addition, the learning curve for PB is large, unless you are already a
competent VB programmer, at which point you will notice many similarities.

My suggestion is that you try to convince the client to stick with R:BASE if
possible.

------------------------------------
If the shoe fits the wear it otherwise don't try and pound a square peg into
a round hole!! If you are in this business and are afraid of a learning
curve, then may I suggest a career change, as this business is all about
learning curves !!!!

Oh and by the way how can the client "Stick With R:Base" when if you read
the original post Marc is going into a client that is already using PB!!!!
------------------------------------

Kindest Regards

David Ballantyne
