I doubt that this is related to the problem but just in case it is:

The one problem I have noticed in the Report Designer is that fields can
move if you have "Snap To Grid" set on and then [Page Up] or [Page Down]
through the report. It appears to me that the grid seems to move unevenly.
If you happen to click on a field after the grid has moved then, naturally,
the field snaps to the new nearest point. It is VERY easy to miss seeing
this happen.

It doesn't take too much to jump to conclusions that if this changes then,
perhaps, other things can for the same/similar reason.
