I have win2000 software here for the server and workstations.  That is what I am going to stick with for a few years.  My NT4 setup (by adhering to MS procedures and recommendations has been rock solid since installation).  I have done only a couple of upgrades at customers to Win2000 server.  So far, I think ADSI is a pain in the ass for a small workgroup (It only is a problem when software is installed that doesn't recognize the multiple profile possibility and therefore has to be installed in a local context on the workstations, negating the permission hierarchy of the Win2000 ADSI) and I don't think I am going to implement it in my own setup, unless I am forced because of Exchange Server...

You could have an issue with security if you leave one or more of your workstations using Win98 and the shared data is on a WinXp computer. Logging on to a WinXp computer, you would have to setup each user in the control panel on your WinXp computer with passwords for all of the users on your system and change the logon at each of the Win98 computers. In the long run you are better off upgrading all your computers at once rather than piecemeal.

Also be aware that WinXp has hardware requirements that may necessitate changing some of your equipment.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/compatibility/default.asp and check out the download for Upgrade Advisor to see what issues, if any, you may have in upgrading to WinXp.

An alternative is to upgrade to Win2000 Professional, it is a rock solid platform and you'll probably save some dollars.

Good luck !

I have run into the following problem: whenever I use Windows Rbase for several hours at a time (which I most of the time), when I exit the application, the computer freezes for at least 1 minute, the same is true when using  Microsoft Internet Explorer. For this and other reasons I am considering upgrading from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP PRO. Are there any issues to consider in regards to Rbase or any other software?

I understand that the main issue when upgrading is drivers; printers in particular. I use Microsoft pier-to-pier network (ethernet CAT-5) to link 4 computers that run Windows 98. The printers run off an ethernet 3-port print server (similar to HP Jet Direct) and include: Minolta Color PageWorks laser, Lexmark Color Optra 1200 laser and HP Design Jet 2500CP plotter.

Any suggestions, recommendations, warnings and past experiences (good or bad) will be greatly appreciated.
