Okay, now you can laugh if you want.  The real cause is NTFS intersected 
w/my current ignorance.  I've encountered this in the past, but never 
thought about it until a while ago.  I had copied the command files fm 
another location while logged on as an ADMINISTRATOR to an NTFS logical 
drive, which means that the OWNER attribute went w/'em - I was SOL and 
didn't know it when I logged on as me, despite references to me, both 
self and external, as "Oz, the Great and Powerful" (I have the wave 
file, if anyone's interested).

So, my current quick-fix was to copy these files fm NTFS partition to 
FAT32 partition and, voila, eureka, I once again feel somewhat great and 
powerful, at least sufficiently so to do my work tomorrow AM.
