Bernie,

My dog is getting pretty old, but if there's a good enough treat involved,
he's anxious to learn just about anything. R:Base 7.0 is better than
Milkbone Flavor Snacks variety pack with peanut butter, beef, chicken,
vegetable, bacon, and cheese!

The SQL standard is a single quote. The SQL standard is % and _ for
the wild card characters. ODBC standards are based on SQL
standards. When the committees were making those decisions 20
years ago, you must not have attended the meetings to tell them that
you hated those choices!

But you're not really such an old dog. You use "u" (like those
teenagers who thumb instant messages on their cell phones) where I
would use "you." That use of "u" "just looks strange to me." <g>

7.0 won't "ignore" double quotes, but you will seriously cripple your
own ability to do a lot of things, if you try to insist on keeping your
non-standard settings. Your forms and reports and labels and
applications won't convert easily. Your database won't be able to take
advantage of a zillion improvements that help you integrate your
R:Base data with other ODBC-compliant applications and software and
data.

Bernie, you wouldn't buy a brand new, large, flat panel, letterbox-
capable, color HDTV and immediately try to set it to show you
programs in tiny black and white only, would you? 7.0 is a quantum
leap, _way_ above and beyond the old R:Base, even above and
beyond some other development environments that were so pretty they
could get away with "old dogs" for their database engines.

Come along on the adventure, Bernie. The members of the list will give
you all the tips you might need to get your old databases and
applications over to the double-quote, percent-sign, underscore
standard, so that you are ready to frolic with us other old dogs. You'll
feel like a puppy again once you get to an R:Base University R:Base
7.0 seminar.

Bill
