We run a Novell network and NDS printer services. With R:base on each of
the local machines and the various databases sitting on the server speed
at startup can change as follows. If the local machine (running RB6.5++)
has a local printer the startup is fast, if a similar local machine has
a network printer as the default printer the startup is  s l o w. So,
while you might not think there is overhead or time delay my best guess
is that there has to be some.

My clients have not complained about any speed issues, so I'm assuming

not a problem - and it definitely makes for a lot less tech support when

users are added and/or new workstations are added or have their
operating
systems changed ...
