Larry, I'm getting in on this late, but you can affirm the ports by doing the following:
Win 9x MyComputer>Properties>Device Manager>Ports> then Delete the ports and let windows reinstall them. On the Reboot, start the Computer in Safe Mode to make certain there are NO ports yet. I have seen the ports listed in Normal mode and then looked in Safe Mode and there would be duplicate ports. When this happens, nothing goes to the referenced port. (I think the ports map directly to the hardware address whereas in Win9x and 2000/XP they are virtual ports and therein is where the possibility of "Ghost" ports being created that are "Same Named" mapped to different addresses. Win2K/XP Device Manager>Ports> Delete ports, then right click on MyComputer at the top in device manager and select "scan for hardware changes", windows will reinstall the ports.
