There was possibly a NET USE in effect. I've seen these things change/disappear for no apparent reason. When I've had your problem, executing the NET USE command fixed it. Also you don't have to keep track of mapping as the only thing which seems to be affected is the DOS program output.
BTW, I'm running two Thinkpads like that now and every time I reboot I have to run the NET USE command to get DOS RBase printing to come out right. The system DOS routines print okay. Both machines are running W2K.
