Jim, I did exactly that last night. After updating workstations I always
place a server copy up on our file server. I forgot to change the location
and overwrote the local workstation (mine) with the server config. I have
learned in the past this can cause problems. I uninstalled RBase from
Windows add-change programs, and then followed Razzak's instructions from
"Un-Installing RBG7'), and installes 7.0 for a CD and then applied
7.1.80.04212005. It works like a champ! Becuase Windows removed the
registry entries I did not have to perform steps 1 and 2. I have attached
the instructions from Razzak's prevoius post. This should do the trick for
you.
Here's how:
01. Using the Windows RegEdit (Registry Editor), search for
the following key:
4D5D203B-7497-4789-8A93-0E3A84C7B56E
Start | Run | RegEdit | Edit | Find ...
02. Highlight the key and then press [Del] key to delete
that registry key.
03. Close the Registry Editor.
File | Exit
04. Using the Windows Search options, search for all files
starting with RBENG, i.e., RBENG*.*
Notice the following files:
RBENGINE.CFG
RBENGINE.DLL
RBENGIN1.MSG
RBENGIN2.MSG
RBENGIN3.MSG
Once found, highlight them and then delete all files.
05. Repeat step 04 for RBIO.DLL
06. You may also want to remove the default RBG7 installation
directory, such as C:/RBTI/RBG7
07. Re-Start your computer
08. Install RBG7 using the original installation CD
09. Apply the latest available updates:

Alastair,
Thanks for the input - the symptoms that you described are exactly the same
as those that I experienced, including the hang up in the installation
process at the same points and the effects on the mouse cursor. The system
that I am using is an HP Pavilion 7850 running Win ME with 512Mb RAM and a
total of about 400Gb of available memory. I'm using a Verizon DSL
connection. I've not experienced any problems with previous upgrades.
Once
I have waited out the extreme startup times, R:Base seems to be running at
about the same speed as ever, but when I ping on the HELP system, it hangs
up again. I initially thought that the system had totally hung, but I
subsequently found that if I waited for 5 or 6 minutes, I eventually see
the
"about" screen showing the 7.1.80 build. I'm willing to try the
re-installation of the entire program but am looking for some confirmation
that my 7.0 installation disk can be upgraded all the way to 7.1.80 with
the
latest 7.1.80 upgrade or if there some intermediary steps required.
Thanks to everyone for their help.
JWS

James,
I seem to have the same or, at least, a very similar problem to you. In my
case it started with the previous beta release (RC3).
I reported to RBTI at the time that the update simply didn't work and the
RBG7.EXE file size seemed to have changed significantly but got no
worthwhile response. Consequently I ignored that update and re-installed
the
previous one because I don't have time to waste investigating these
irregularities any more.
I downloaded the release version first of all using Download Accelerator
Plus - always a pain because I have to correct the URL every time but it
saves endless re-tries if/when my Internet connection fails. I got much the
same effects with that as with RC3.
I then downloaded it again after having uninstalled DAP with the same
results - not surprisingly because the download file size was unchanged
(4,612,041 bytes).
In both those cases the unpack/install procedure "paused" - read hung -
with
the RBG7.EXE file current progress on 95% and the overall progress on 71%.
After some minutes, five - maybe more, the process completed suddenly.
Following Razzak's response to you I attempted a third download without DAP
and having stopped every other process on my PC that I could - no virus
scan, etc. I also waited five minutes after the end of the download to
ensure no modem activity before closing everything "properly" and re-booted
before attempting to install the new files. This _was_ different and did
_not_ "hang" at all. The downloaded file size, however, was exactly the
same
as both previous attempts.
Nevertheless, the problem was not solved. Like you, I get a sluggish - to
say the least - response from my PC and the mouse hibernates. It is,
effectively, unusable even before trying to run R:Base. Right-clicking on
the RBG7.EXE file, for example, and trying to display the properties takes
an age.
Re-installing RC2 solves the problems so I have gone back to that - again.
Now, if my memory serves me correctly, I seem to remember a similar problem
with, I think, v6.5++. I have looked back through the list postings that I
have from July 2000 onwards but no subject strikes me as relevant.
As there is no indication that the file size of RBG7.EXE is now expected to
be different from previous releases I can only assume that, as it is
extracting to about a fifth of the previous size, it is not extracting
correctly. Even so, I get the impression that the problem is caused by some
conflict with other software or the replacement of a common file.
Regards,
Alastair.
