James, I believe that all versions of R:Base have the single updatable table restriction. The restriction comes from the SQL standards, and R:Base, correctly, follows the standards.
I still have my 5.5 manuals, and sometimes open them beside the screen for quick syntax reference, although I have not used them since 7.x came out because the differences are huge.
