When I first got a frame that required a threadless headset, back in
the mid 90s, there were only a few choices available. One was Cane
Creek, the created of the modern threadless headset, and the other was
CK. My LBS recommended the CK because he had seen quality problems
with CC. Note, at that time, Campy didn't have a threadless headset.
Shimano didn't and still doesn't have one as it doesn't want to make
royalty payments to CC.

What I like about CK headsets is they have cartridge bearings.
However, so does Shimano. So, if you want a good threaded headset with
cartridge bearings, consider the Shimano STX for only $28, it comes in
both 1" and 1 and 1/8":

In fact, the STX headset is a great choice for those older MTBs that
came with 1 and 1/8" THREADED headset. Good Luck! Brewster
