I'm beginning to think Jan Heine and I occupy different dimensions when it comes to brakes. I'm not interested in the long-reach dual pivot debate (I don't have any bikes with caliper-style brakes anymore), but he always says Paul brakes squeal and my Paul brakes never squeal, whereas in my experience his beloved Mafacs (particularly the the cantis) squeal all the time without a perfect setup. I love vintage centerpulls and cantis, Mafacs included, but Paul brakes are a lot easier to setup, adjust, and maintain.
As with many things I BQ, I think the tests point more to regional terrain variation and user experience than strong empirical difference. I would point to the agree-to-disagree conclusion on brake levers in the BQ brakes issue as a good example of how those reviews might best be done.
