Summary:

The Rivendell Atlantis is a masterpiece. It is arguably the finest loaded
touring frameset ever made. Rivendell/Grant just put a lot of time, money
and emotional energy into a re-design of their true "flagship". They made
it ~$1000 less expensive, more stable (longer) and more comfortable
(upright), while not eliminating the $2700 original. Some people seem to
disapprove of one or more of these objectives, but none has explained why
they think the Rivendell MIT Atlantis will be an inferior loaded touring
bicycle to its predecessor. Most capitalist humans express their
disapproval of a durable good by not buying it. Some people would just try
to say something nice to Grant/Riv, seeing as they essentially just saved
themselves from closing. If you can't possibly think of something
constructive and positive to say, and just can't hold in your complaints
and criticisms, I guess let them fly if you must. I think the MIT Atlantis
is a splendid looking bike, and I know for a fact I've never ridden a bike
like it, because there's never been a bike quite like it. I'm eager to
hear more about it, and I hope it works out for Rivendell Bicycle Works.
