9 speed chains are in fact narrower than 8 which in turn was narrower
than the old 7 (although 8 is the new 7 as far as chains go) which in
turn was narrower than the old 5/6, but in fact 9 speed chains work
perfectly well on 8-speed rings and cranks (I have several bikes set up
that way) and definitely work just fine on the Sugino XD-2 crank.
