Not a californian, so have limited experience, but recently (April)
drove the coastal route from our sons home in SF to Ft Bragg.

Here's the pluses: we found Ft Bragg to be a delightful town. We
stayed at a very nice and affordale B&B, the Atrium, and really
enjoyed visiting the Medicino Coastal Gardens there. We went through
40 acres of in-bloom rhodedendrums, opening into a pine wood and views
of the ocean. The downside, as we considered cycling the route. Lots
of very narrow, windy road (with great views) that we suspect might be
quite crowded with cars after Memorial Day. Bring a climbing gear! On
the return trip we headed inland through the Redwood forrest, which
was equally beautiful. I remember stopping at Anderson Brewery for a
great tour and libation.

Feeling jealous,
Michael
