I did a similar ride 10 years ago from Seattle to San Francisco. The
hiker biker sites were great and super cheap. The freeways in Oregon
have huge shoulders and are great to ride on. Highway 1 in California
gets a little dicey, had a lot of potholes and can be washed out. It
makes up for it by being beautiful. I would use 35mm tires for the
rough road. Also make sure you have really good rain gear (pants and
jacket) and long fenders with flaps, we had a lot of rain in oregon in
the middle of summer. FYI we averaged between 13-18 mph fully loaded
on the trip, might be helpful for trying to figure out timing. It was
amazing though and I would happily do it again! You are gonna have a
lot of fun.
