The hostel at Pigeon Point is just as nice as the Montara one. I suggest you plan a stop in San Francisco. First of all, SF is one of the world's great cities, but also if you ride from SP Taylor State Park just east of Point Reyes Station all the way through San Francisco to Montara, it makes a long day, much of which is tedious urban/suburban riding.
Speaking of that area, the standard route takes you on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, routing you around Mount Tamalpais. Riding *over* Mount Tam is better. I recommend staying on Highway 1 past Point Reyes Station (of course, stop at the bakery in Point Reyes Station!), then heading up Bolinas-Fairfax Road. Then either go right on Ridgecrest to continue up more of Mt. Tam, or go straight through.
