------- I decided the same thing years ago. Smartwool (softest, but short-lived and more expensive), Castelli (thin, wear well, but not soft), and some cheapos (but US-made) from Target (way cheap, wear like iron, and feel pretty good too). Military surplus (even cheaper, but feel like horse hair). I own nothing but wool socks now, but I'm otherwise not too picky. But as you can tell from the varied responses, you might have some experimenting to do before you find a favorite.
