Dave Moulton's blog (http://davesbikeblog.squarespace.com/) discusses trail toward the bottom where a link takes you to an earlier entry on trail -- and that in turn to a yet older one. I can't say if he is right, but he has certainly ridden a lot and built a lot of bikes. At any rate, an interesting perspective with reference to history (he started racing in the early 1950s).
