I've been really happy with a pair of Mizuno shot-putt (general track and field) shoes I found on Amazon - they have thin but stiff flat soles, no tread just smooth rubber, and work great on VP Thin Gripster pedals. I can move my feet side-to-side, and also get extra positions by moving my feet forward for a period of calf stretching while pedaling. Just an excellent combination, that allows easy walking off the bike, too.
