Yup, it always turns out to be more practical in theory than practice. 
 Wheel sizes, hub lengths, bike clearance always make it less doable than 
we would wish. The other reality is that bikes, despite their designers 
claims of versatility always excel within a narrow tire size range and 
design. However, I regularly swap wheels under the following conditions: a 
change of season, just like the car one bike has summer and winter wheels; 
when I go out to the garage and discover a flat that I don't feel like 
messing with; when a tire blows up and I'm ten miles from home and late for 
work, I call my wife who brings me a spare wheel.  This last scenario has 
occurred a total of one time in 30+ years of riding!

BTW It's way too cold in Vermont for me to even consider riding.
