Actually, for SLA's vice vented lead-acid batteries, there is a specific voltage that you do not want to exceed (gassing voltage), beyond which you are causing hydrolysis of the water within the cells faster than the catalyst within them can recombine them. This causes the relief to lift, and you lose some of the gasses, thus losing water from the electrolyte. This is a long-term concern as eventually you will wind up with duffed cells :) So if you can find out what the gassing voltage is you can charge at whatever rate the batteries will bear at a constant voltage :)
