Stewart, As Derek points out there are multiple types of speed controllers. Dual and single channel's are typically used (I use a dual in my tank). A single channel is just that, it controls one motor with one input from the R/C receiver. Dual channel systems control two motors with two inputs from the R/C receiver and they also include a mixing feature that allows you to drive the tank with one stick on the R/C transmitter. The preferred setup today is two single channel controllers with a separate mixing circuit like the IMX-1. Main reason for this is reliability and cost. Two singles and a mixing circuit have come down in cost to below that of most high amperage dual channel controllers. Also, when something busts, it's cheaper and easier to replace one single channel controller than an entire integrated dual channel one.
