AC coupling of off grid Outback inverters seems to be a very good solution for having a generator backup system while feeding the grid. The generator won't have a problem synchronizing with the off grid FX, and the grid tie inverter will take care of the UL 1741 requirements. Of course, transfer switches and protective relays will be required. Depending on the grid tie inverter used, this approach should be cost effective compared to using the new Xantrex equipment. Also, the Outback technical support is excellent.

I should have also mentioned that the “dump” or “diversion” control can be done via an AC load with a relatively inexpensive AC solid-state relay and AC loads such as AC baseboard or AC electric water heater elements – which are much easier and less expensive than doing it with the lower voltage / higher current DC relay and loads.

The OutBack FX series offers an AUX output control mode for both AC and DC diversion which has a fixed voltage level but has an adjustable “on” time which can be set to zero for applications using a solid-state relay.
