Hi Drake, In general, you want to use DHCP unless its an unusual network. You would typically enter this into the network page of the device. This gives the router control of the IP address and all of the other networking parameters of the device on the network. Static is more common in a commercial environment.
If you need to do static for some reason, you would want to talk to the IT person who set up the network. Otherwise, if you choose an IP address already used, it will cause problems and might kick the other device off the network.
