speaking from experience, i can say the first part was fun, the bug
squashing is not. my app allows the user to layout certain windows
using a layout tool. this gets saved as xml and is reconstituted as
realbasic controls.
its been a constant battle with container controls and control
indexes. the design side was the easy part though, so much of my
headaches are moot if you are drawing your own controls.

Yeah, but then you wouldn't have the fun of writing such a visual
layout tool :) I think it would be a blast to write something like
that.
