it'd even be relatively easy to copy and paste or write a parser that reads the positions of your existing controls on that window. so you have a template for the new layout. it looks like things are pretty well set (let me be another to say the gui is beautiful), so export the window as xml, and use it for controltype, top, left, width and height info... if you were fancy you could even steal the code from the event handlers, and place it in the appropriate place in you new generic class.

You don't, in general. But if you have very specific needs for which the general visual layout editor wasn't designed, then yes, a more specific tool may be helpful.
