The use case that forums do not address is: "I want to see all the
questions that people are asking, and occasionally respond to those
that I can help with." The introduction of forums has made that
behavior prohibitively expensive in terms of time and effort.

Agreed. I'm happy to answer questions here, but won't be doing so on the forums -- it's just not worth my time.

The NUG has gone sharply downhill since the forums were introduced.
It's hard to imagine RS killing the forums now that they are there.
Since forums are so detestable to navigate, perhaps there could be a
way to subscribe to them via email.

One can hope. It's a serious problem, and some solution needs to be found.

If there are any other LEGO fans here, you probably already know about LUGNET (http://www.lugnet.com/). They have the best web forums I've ever seen, and any group in the hierarchy can also be subscribed to as a mailing list, or via NNTP. Everybody gets to use whatever interface they like best. Unfortunately it's all custom software, and a big pile of unmaintainable spaghetti from what I'm able to gather. But perhaps the RB community could band together to produce (or find) something similar.

Best,
- Joe
