Thanks Thomas.
While I agree with you that Xcode is more complex than RB it might
just be easier than you think if you get your feet wet with it. The
projects I've done with it are 1) relatively simple, and 2) not
especially well coded or thought out. Point nr. 2 is one of the
reasons I don't like diving back into my projects at a much later
date to add or fix things.
I really find obj-c (especially in conjunction with cocoa) to be
quite elegant. One of the main things that make it seem much more
difficult, in my opinion, is that very little is spelled out for you
as it is in RB. That is to say, you have to dig around quite a bit
at almost every turn to find out what methods or properties comprise
all of the many objects. It's nice to just "fill in the blanks" with
an RB project. Someone once told me that you don't "know cocoa," you
know where to "look up" cocoa (or something to that effect).

Phil,
I too am a hobbyist programmer and my hat goes off to you for being
able to
use Xcode, it's far more complex for me in all aspects than Rb.
I have been reading some very disturbing things about RB 2006 and
wondered
if those negative comments are those of a noisy few or the general
consensus. And if that's the case, would I be better off waiting
on RB 2006
and using 5.5.2 (the last version I have).
I can only relate my experiences with 2006, I did not buy 2005. The
last
four simple projects that I began in 2006 ended up with me
reporting bugs. I
went back to 5.5.5 and all was well with them. Manipulating items in a
window on my iMac is very sluggish.
I have not applied for my 90 day money back guarantee, but I have
considered
it. All I can do is relate my experiences in an honest manner to
this list
and REAL since this is there chosen business model. My motives are
to help
them improve their product because it brings me joy to use it. I don't
consider myself and this position to be neither noisy,
disrespectable or in
the minority only a reflection of my daily use.
