.sitx is the "new and improved" format that Aladdin (now Allume) came out with but a LOT of people never bothered to upgrade/update to the latest versions of stuffit expander to decompress them.

With OS X having zip built in and being able to create a DMG very easily the whole reason for being for Allume seems to have slipped from being necessary to a footnote in Mac history
