AB for Web uses SQLite for (currently) news, in an upcoming
release task, time tracking:
http://www.turingart.com/abForWeb_lan__de.htm
SQLite worked very nicely. I developed my own binding-framework
for DB and file-data models, since I tried to bind more controls
more tightly to data and operations.
AB for Web uses parts of it, but only the lower non-control parts.

Thanks for the messages. I don't require that the db be free. i
don't mind
paying a reasonable amount if its reliable, stable, well supported,
and has good
examples.
Has anyone made a portal application and accessed data in a db that
a RB
application also accesses?
In regards to having a database stored on a central server, I'd say
MySQL is your best bet, powerful and free. I agree, the interfacing
currently in RB isn't great, but it works fine for my needs!
There is also rumors of a new Database Plugin of some sort being
available at some point for MySQL so it is a good choice for the
future.
MySQL is not "free" as in beer. For certain uses it's downright
expensive
PostgreSQL is free
