Here is a reply from MySQL's sales team:

There are 3 keys in MySQL Licensing :

* Do you bundle your application with MySQL ?
* Is your application Closed Source
* Does your software need MySQL to run ?

If the answer to those three questions is yes then you will require a
commercial licence.

An alternative that may simplify the problem on the Mac side is to use the Actual ODBC driver for Open Source Databases. We are a MySQL Certified Partner and have already paid the pound of flesh required by MySQL AB for client access.
