Karen, Your code looks fine. If data really is coming in, it sounds like a hardware problem. You could have a bad connection that allows sending data, but not receiving it, if the receive wire is not connected. Check your cable with an ohm meter to make sure you have continuity from pins 2-2, 3-3 and 5-5 (for a 9 pin serial cable).
